Internal emails expose bias towards lethal management of deer in Hamilton
The Hamilton Conservation Authority is distancing itself from a Ministry of Natural Resources’ (MNR) report that recommends a massive deer hunt at Iroquoia Heights Conservation Area in Ancaster. In response to public opposition, the conservation authority now claims it never supported lethal management of White-tailed Deer despite comments in the local media to the contrary.
Internal emails from the desk of conservation authority staff expose a bias towards lethal management and against wildlife protection advocates. The records were obtained through the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
The close working relationship between conservation authority staff and ministry staff concentrates on disarming opponents and implementing an urban deer hunt.
The Peaceful Parks filed for the internals records when the Hamilton Conservation Authority failed to release information that would support a massive deer hunt at Iroquoia Heights. Approximately 500 records were released.
In addition to exposing a bias towards lethal management, the records also confirm a lack of research by the Hamilton Conservation Authority measuring vegetative response to deer browse. It became abundantly clear that the conservation authority was depending on the MNR report to will Board approval and public support.
It is unfortunate but not unexpected that the Hamilton Conservation Authority and MNR underestimated the public’s understanding of these kinds of issues. Included in the records were many letters written to the mayor from ordinary citizens outraged that the conservation authority would consider a massive deer kill in their city.
